The Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

So what can we do when this mess is roughly 617,000 square miles? Scientists, engineers and concerned private individuals are all looking at this problem and are coming up with ideas on how to safely clean up this mess. The problem is the shear size of the debris field and how to safely remove it without putting wildlife in danger. Seahaven does not simply want to be another sounding board for the world’s ocean issues. Reading articles about these matters does nothing but depress us and at times it seems hopeless. So what action can we as individuals do? Do we get boats and venture out to scoop up and collect all this pollution only to have 1000 times the amount we collect wind up back in our oceans? The simple answer is no! DON’T LOSE HOPE! There is something we as individuals can do! And it won’t cost you a dime! If anything it can actually save you money! COMMIT TO REDUCING THE USE OF SINGLE USE PLASTIC. Its easier than you think. COMMIT TO JUST THIS ONE THING TO HELP!

DRINK YOUR WATER RESPONSIBLY!

FACT: It is estimated that 15% of people in the U.S. only consume bottled water.

FACT It takes at minimum 450 years for a single water bottle to degrade.

FACT Only 15% of all water bottles are recycled!

FACT The US alone produces almost 1 million plastic beverage bottle a minute! THINK ABOUT THAT!

IF YOU STACKED THE AMOUNT OF PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES THE U.S. PRODUCES IN A YEAR IT WOULD BE 6,313,131 MILES TALL! Average water bottle is 8″ tall the U.S. produces 50 billion annually.

It is estimated that 12% of all ocean pollution is drink and water bottles!

Purchase a water filter for your tap water if filtered water is preferred.

Use a reusable bottle or mug for your beverages, even when ordering from STARBUCKS.

U.S. Merchant shipping fleet dumps 14 billion pounds of garbage in our oceans every year.

In 1975, the National Academy of Sciences estimated that 14 billion pounds of garbage was being dumped into the ocean every year. That’s more than 1.5 million pounds per hour. More than 85% of this trash was estimated to come from the world’s merchant shipping fleet in the form of cargo-associated wastes. According to the Academy, the United States could be the source of approximately one third of this ocean pollution.”
